Summer Camps

Tuesday, March 23, 2010

The need for quality, summer, recreational programs for children with cancer and their siblings continues to grow. Our summer camps strive to bring together kids undergoing similar struggles in hopes of strengthening, uniting, and overcoming obstacles.

Camp Little One: July 17, 2010

A one-day mini camp for children who do not meet the minimum age requirement of six for either Siblings Camp  or Survivors Camp . This fun day camp is combined with both children with cancer and their siblings. Our goal is to provide a special day that makes them feel they have the same privileges as the older children.

Summer Camp at Camp Tall Pines

Siblings Camp: July 11- 17, 2010

Camp Bravo is week-long camp program restricted to children who are a sibling of a child with cancer ages 6 to 16. This camp provides much of the same curriculum as Survivor's Camp, however the primary target is to focus on the needs of these often times forgotten children. Social workers are mingled in with staff to help get to the root of the anger and fear of these troubled siblings. Bonds with other campers who are facing the same emotional struggles develop into lasting friendships.

Survivors Camp: July 17-23, 2010

This is a week long summer camp restricted to children who have cancer and are ages 6 to 16. This camp provides an opportunity to have a normal camping experience. It is an empowering experience that allows the children to address their own fears by bonding with children who are facing similar challenges. The bonds that are created amongst the children turn into friendships that help carry them through the depression of long hospital stays, painful surgeries, treatments, and the embarrassment they feel of having no hair. It also provides an opportunity for the children to administer some of the basic care for themselves that has been taken away during their illness by over concerned and frightened parents. This small amount of independence can be very empowering.

Both camps are held at the Camp of the Tall Pines in Weed, New Mexico. We are happy that we have found this camp site because we hope to make it the permanent home for Candlelighters Summer Camps. Children participate in activities such as archery, horeseback riding, high ropes courses, zip line, and many others!
